Capture Photography Festival is an annual photography festival in Vancouver. The festival officially takes place for the month of April every year, however, there is art up for viewing at various times throughout the year from small studios to sides of buildings.
In addition to designing the annual catalogue and didactics, I also help with the production of their two largest public art pieces; the Dal Grauer and the Anvil Centre sites. Translating digital files to print always has its challenges and this project was no different. It was extremely rewarding to put my problem-solving skills to the test to bring these projects to fruition.

As this is a photography magazine I wanted to keep the design and layout aspects minimal to not take away from the artists' work. For the layout design, I kept to a few varying grid formats that changed slightly per section. This allows for visual cues for the reader as to what section they were viewing. Where the grid and minimalist layout allowed for the photography to shine through without distraction.
In addition to the printed mazagine, the catalogue can also be viewed in digital format.

Below is one of many art installations I created print-ready files for Capture. Creating these files can be quite tricky as they are so large. After confirming correct resolution and specs in Photoshop, I brought them into an Illustrator print template to separate all the individual panels for printing. Each panel had to be exporting as their own JPG.

Layout design is all about how effortless it feels. The less you noticed the design choices the more you can engage with the content on the page. Layout design isn't just about copy and pasting text onto a page. There are a lot of big and small tweaks and changes to create a clean design. In the before section I highlight some of the many things I had to finesse or correct to end up with the final product.
